Writing and Workouts - For Our Hands
Handwriting is a large component of a student’s school day. Students experiencing difficulty with handwriting often struggle to complete legible schoolwork, work at a slower pace, demonstrate increased frustration, and may experience decreased confidence and self-esteem. We are here to help! We have several handwriting groups, Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1-2 graders, works on a variety of skills including:
- pencil grasp
- hand and finger strength
- visual motor and perceptual skills
- hand-eye coordination,
- upper body strength
- writing legibility
- organization of written work on a page
- endurance for writing activities
This group is modeled off of the Learning Without Tears handwriting program. This curriculum uses an evidence-based developmental approach, and readiness skills are broken down into developmentally appropriate components. Lessons are taught using a multisensory approach including wooden pieces to build shapes and letters, play dough, chalk boards, music, and individual workbooks. General structure of groups will include gross motor warm-up activities, music and movement, tabletop fine motor activities, and writing practice in their handwriting workbook. Each week the class will focus on specific writing skills and letters.
The process begins with gathering more information regarding your child’s specific challenges as well your goals for your child through filling out an application. Our goal is to provide support and guidance to increase your child’s writing skills as well as confidence with writing! A weekly group summary will be provided detailing specific skills worked on in the group that week as well as a follow up activity for practice at home. Get Set For School Group - Beginning Writers
Early childhood is a time of rapid growth and development. Pre-writing skills are the fundamental building blocks children need to develop before they can become confident writers. These skills contribute to a child’s ability to hold and use a pencil, the ability to draw, write, copy and color. When these skills are under-developed it can lead to frustration and resistance due not being able to produce legible writing or keep up in class. The Beginning Writers handwriting group will work on developing pre-writing skills and early writing skills by working on:
